THE VANDIVERE FAMILY

by Jerry D. Vandiver

I retain the title of the document originally composed by my Great Grandfather Matthew Leroy Vandiver as a dedication to him. He passed on his version of our family history and thus inspired my interest and lifelong addiction to genealogical research.

This is the rebirth of my website dealing with family history, the focal point being the Vandiver family. My plan is going to be less colorful and more informative than the previous version of this site. There will eventually be four major sections as follows:

The Vandiver’s descended from pre-Revolutionary immigrant ancestors (by any spelling).

Related families that interested me.

Individuals that interested me (related or not).

My biological pedigree.

The first section will focus on Jacop Van der Veer, with attention given to early generations of those descended from Cornelius Janszen “Dominicus” Vanderveer and the theoretical lineage of Vandivers to Michael Paulszen van der Voort.   From there, I will present the beginnings of family lines that have not been proven to any of the acknowledged progenitors.  My own family line will eventually be presented up to the current generation, along with the family lines of those who have helped through the years and have given me permission to add their lines to my site.

Most of the related families will be connected to the descendants of Jacop Van der Veer or my own family line (which is amongst those that have not been proven to an acknowledged progenitor).  They will usually only receive a single page done in an outline format.  I will not be addressing families that already have more than enough representation on line.  These will be families that appear to lack any serious attention.

The third section will be single page biographies of interesting people.  For the most part, these are individuals that I have run across who were in one manner or to one extent or another associated with or had some influence on the Vandiver ancestors. In most cases, there is likely to be no direct connection at all, excepting that their actions helped shape the environment the early Vandivers dealt with and were a part of themselves.

My biological pedigree will deal with my own ancestry – for those that do not know, I was adopted by my first step father when I was 5 years old – no, I was not born a Vandiver. Unlike the other sections, this will be a full pedigree so far as records will allow or support.

There will be information pages added from time to time that deal with general historical information, data or even research suggestions and techniques. One thing I will not do any more is spend more than a paragraph attempting to debunk erroneous family traditions. It has been my experience that people are comfortable with their traditions and will not let go of them regardless of the evidence presented.
